In accordance with Decision No. 1214/QĐ-ĐHKT dated April 24, 2024, issued by the VNU University of Economics and Business, the seminar on "Developing Exam Question Banks to Enhance Assessment and Examination Practices" was held on May 31, 2024. Organized by the Center for Educational Quality Assurance, the seminar aimed to provide faculty members with additional knowledge on measurement and assessment in education. Developing an exam question bank is a crucial step toward standardizing student assessment practices. Maintaining, building, and expanding question banks play a vital role in ensuring objective and accurate evaluations of students' academic performance while also enhancing the quality of teaching.
The seminar welcomed distinguished guests, including MSc. Nguyen Van Dung, Head of the Measurement Research Department at the VNU Testing Center, and MSc. Lê Thị Hoàng Hà, Deputy Head of the Educational Assessment Department at the VNU University of Education.
Representing the VNU University of Economics and Business were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Trung Thanh, Rector of the university, MSc. Dao Thi Thanh Huyen, Director of the Center for Educational Quality Assurance, along with faculty leaders, lecturers from various faculties and institutes, as well as leaders and specialists from the Training Department and the Center for Education Quality Assurance.
Opening the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Trung Thanh, Rector of the VNU University of Economics and Business, emphasized the importance of assessment activities in general and the development of course-specific test question banks at the university in particular. Currently, UEB manages more than 20 test question banks; however, the university must continue reviewing those that have been in use for many years. In the coming year, the Center of Education Quality Assurance is tasked with expanding the development of additional test question banks across faculties and institutes to ensure balanced coverage across all training programs. This is particularly crucial as the university is undergoing accreditation for four academic programs under the international ACBSP accreditation standards. UEB consistently prioritizes assessment quality, and through specialized discussions like this, faculty members will better understand the significance of building test question banks within their departments. The university remains committed to supporting lecturers in planning and compiling test questions that align with the learning outcomes of each course.
During the seminar, MSc. Le Thi Hoang Ha, Deputy Head of the Department of Educational Assessment at the VNU University of Education, delivered a presentation on "Designing Assessment Activities to Meet Course Learning Outcomes." Her talk covered three main topics: the benefits and requirements of outcome-based assessment, assessment methods aligned with learning outcomes, and the assessment process based on learning outcomes.
In the second part of the seminar, MSc. Nguyen Van Dung, Head of the Measurement Research Department at the VNU Testing Center, delivered a presentation on "Techniques and Principles for Constructing Objective Multiple-Choice Questions and Exams." This is a highly significant topic, frequently applied in teaching and exam development. MSc. Nguyen Van Dung focused on key aspects such as:
His insights provided faculty members with valuable guidance on enhancing assessment quality through scientifically designed test questions.
The seminar was highly appreciated by the faculty members of the University of Economics, who expressed their desire for the Center of Education Quality Assurance to continue organizing similar professional discussions. These sessions provide valuable insights, helping faculty members enhance their expertise in designing assessment activities that align with course learning outcomes. Additionally, they support the development of multiple-choice exam questions that meet international accreditation standards, particularly those of ACBSP.
