Following Plan No. 4636/KH-DHKT dated December 26, 2022, on the implementation of self-assessment for bachelor's degree programs in Finance - Banking, Accounting, International Economics, and Business Administration under the ACBSP accreditation standards in 2023.
To ensure a successful ACBSP accreditation process, the VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB) has organized various conferences, workshops, and training sessions to equip lecturers with knowledge and experience in designing course components, developing learning outcomes, structuring exam content, and implementing modern, diverse, and internationally aligned assessment methods that meet ACBSP requirements.
Designing rubrics and grading using rubrics is a mandatory requirement in the ACBSP accreditation process. On May 18, 2023, the ACBSP accreditation implementation team at the University of Economics conducted a "Training for Lecturers on Grading Using Rubrics." The training session was attended by Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy, Head of the Accounting - Auditing Department and Head of the ACBSP Accreditation Implementation Team, along with lecturers from the Faculty of Finance - Banking, Faculty of Accounting - Auditing, Faculty of International Economics and Business, and the Institute of Business Administration.
The session was led by Dr. Bui Phuong Chi, a lecturer from the Faculty of Accounting - Auditing. During her studies and research in Taiwan, she actively participated in the development of rubrics and assessment methods under ACBSP accreditation standards. Her direct involvement in accreditation processes provided her with valuable knowledge, experience, and practical insights. With her expertise, she guided lecturers at the VNU UEB in grading using rubrics, significantly supporting faculties and institutes in adapting to and implementing ACBSP accreditation standards.
During the training session, Dr. Bui Phuong Chi guided lecturers in grading eight courses from four faculties/institutes, specifically:
Grading using rubrics is a relatively new and complex approach. However, it is recognized globally as an objective, accurate, fair, scientific, and reliable assessment method for measuring both student performance and program quality.
Rubrics serve as an effective evaluation and self-assessment tool for both students and lecturers. They help instructors define the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies that students need to develop, enabling a well-structured teaching and learning process. With detailed performance descriptions at different levels, students can track their own progress and compare it with their peers. As a result, rubrics enhance transparency and consistency in assessment, ensuring fairness for students.
Additionally, with clearly defined criteria, students can provide timely and accurate feedback to lecturers regarding their understanding and skill acquisition. At the same time, rubrics offer valuable insights for instructors to objectively evaluate learners, monitor student progress, and take necessary measures for academic support.
In Vietnam, the design and grading of exams using rubrics remain relatively uncommon in higher education. This approach is challenging and complex, requiring in-depth knowledge of academic programs, assessment and measurement methodologies, experience in curriculum design, and expertise in quality assurance.
As one of the pioneering institutions within Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the UEB has proactively adopted this innovative and effective assessment method. This initiative aligns with the strategic direction of the University Council and the guidance of the University’s leadership in successfully internationalizing its academic programs.
With strong leadership support and the dedication of faculty members across faculties and institutes, the integration of rubrics as a standardized tool for evaluating and measuring student performance at the VNU University of Economics and Business is set for successful implementation.
