Dr. Nguyen Van Phuong, a lecturer at the School of Business Administration, VNU University of Economics and Business, recently participated in an intensive training program on "Enhancing Awareness of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) in Research for Development" at ICRISAT, India. This journey was not only an invaluable learning opportunity but also a significant milestone in the pursuit of knowledge and global vision. Below, Dr. Nguyen Van Phuong shares his heartfelt reflections and insightful lessons from the experience.
A Memorable Beginning: From Vietnam to India
As I prepared to board the plane departing Vietnam, I felt a blend of excitement and slight apprehension. The encouraging messages and well wishes from family, friends, and colleagues gave me strength and motivation to embark on this intellectual exploration. Upon arrival at Hyderabad Airport, I was warmly welcomed by the ICRISAT team, whose friendly smiles and hospitality immediately eased the fatigue from the long journey and made me feel at home.
The official “Welcome Meeting” was conducted in a solemn yet cozy atmosphere, marking the start of the training program. Representatives from ICRISAT introduced the institute’s history and its impactful contributions in agriculture and sustainable development. I was deeply impressed by the institute’s modern infrastructure, advanced laboratories, and extensive library – all of which raised my expectations for the days of learning ahead.
One of the highlights for me was ICRISAT’s impressive facilities: a spacious and green campus, a wide range of research zones, well-equipped classrooms with cutting-edge teaching aids, and clean, comfortable dormitories. The canteen offered a variety of nutritious meals, helping participants stay energized throughout the intensive sessions. Particularly memorable were the visits to research labs and agricultural technology demonstration areas, which broadened my perspective and reignited a passion for research in all participants.
GESI and the “borderless” valuations at ICRISAT
The sessions at ICRISAT proved to be invaluable experiences. With engaging teaching methods and relatable real-world examples, the instructors helped us gain a comprehensive understanding of the multidimensional aspects of gender equality and social inclusion in agricultural research. The dynamic interaction between instructors and participants, characterized by thought-provoking questions and candid discussions, created an open and effective learning environment. Participants actively engaged and contributed meaningful insights during group discussions, demonstrating sharp critical thinking and strong analytical skills.
Beyond academic enrichment, the program also offered opportunities to build lasting international friendships. The openness and friendliness of fellow students and researchers from diverse countries created a vibrant cultural exchange environment. Through conversations, group activities, and shared meals, bonds of friendship, mutual understanding, and collaboration were formed. Participants consistently supported one another in both academic and daily life, leaving a strong impression of enthusiasm and camaraderie.
Discovering Indian Landmarks and Culture
During the training period, our group had the chance to explore several iconic landmarks in India. The breathtaking natural landscapes and historic cultural sites offered not only enjoyable experiences but also deeper insights into the country and its people.
This journey also allowed Vietnamese participants to savor the unique cuisine of Hyderabad and explore the rich traditions and customs of the local community. The mild weather at the time added to the charm of the experience. For me personally, this was truly a memorable period - an opportunity to encounter new perspectives in the world’s most populous nation.
The program concluded with a formal certificate awarding ceremony, marking the successful completion of the course. Receiving the certificate was not only a proud moment of academic achievement but also recognition of our persistent efforts and eagerness to learn.
Looking back on this journey, I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful to have had the opportunity to join such a meaningful program at ICRISAT. The dedication of the instructors, the wholehearted support from international peers, and the rich cultural experiences have left a profound impression on me. I am confident that the knowledge and skills acquired from this training will serve as a valuable foundation for contributing to research and development in Vietnam.
The training at ICRISAT came to a fulfilling end, leaving indelible memories for me and my fellow Vietnamese participants. From the warm welcome and engaging academic sessions to the cultural exchanges and shared experiences, the entire journey was a remarkable intellectual and personal enrichment. The understanding of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) gained from the program not only broadened our research perspectives but also equipped us with practical tools to contribute toward a more equitable and sustainable society. We left ICRISAT with deep gratitude and a strong commitment to applying what we had learned to our work and lives, continuing the journey of discovery and contribution.
