Having marked its 50th anniversary, VNU University of Economics and Business is embarking on a new chapter of internationalization. Central to this journey is strengthening its core by investing in faculty development through specialized training programs. A recent internal training course on "Applying Data Analysis Software for Impact Evaluation in Economics and Policy – Using Advanced Econometric Models" underscored UEB’s commitment to innovation and comprehensive development.
Held on December 2nd and 3rd, 2024, the course attracted a large number of lecturers and researchers. The curriculum focused on strengthening knowledge and skills in applying modern data analysis methods within economics and policy.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc.Prof. Hoang Khac Lich, Vice Rector of UEB, stated, "In the context of the digital economy and the rapid growth of big data, knowledge of data analysis and advanced econometric modeling is essential. This training will enhance the research capacity of UEB lecturers, contributing significantly to the university's overall development."
The course covered a range of advanced, practical topics, including:
- Instrumental Variable and Panel Data Estimation: Guidance on constructing and estimating results using instrumental variable methods and two-step dynamic GMM models.
- Difference-in-Differences (DiD) Method: Data construction, necessary assumptions, placebo testing, and result analysis.
- Regression Discontinuity (RD) Method: Distinguishing between Sharp RD and Fuzzy RD, along with applications in impact analysis and evaluation.
The sessions were dynamic and engaging, led by experienced lecturers and leading researchers: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Vu Van Huong, Head of the Department of Statistics and Economic Research Methods, shared his expertise on Instrumental Variable and Panel Data Estimation. Dr. Hoang Xuan Trung, a specialist in applied economics, labor economics, and health economics, covered the DiD and RD methods, offering comprehensive insights into these analytical tools.
The training emphasized practical application, with participants working with modern data analysis software and completing hands-on exercises.
This training is part of a series of internal professional development activities demonstrating UEB's commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable growth in the face of digitalization and globalization.
At the course's conclusion, groups presented their findings and proposed practical research applications, demonstrating a deep understanding of the methodologies and their ability to apply them effectively.
As UEB moves forward, striving to "Unleash Inner Strength - Embrace Smart Governance - Enhance Global Standing," these intensive training programs not only meet the learning and research needs of the faculty but also strengthen the university's reputation in economics and management, opening doors to collaborations with leading academic institutions worldwide. With a faculty increasingly strong in expertise, dynamic in thinking, and innovative in research, UEB is well-equipped to navigate the evolving global landscape.
