The International Conference on "Twin Transformation: Digital Transformation and Green Transformation in Businesses Management for Sustainability", held on September 30th at the University of Economics & Business - VNU, highlighted the crucial interplay between digital and green transitions in Vietnam and globally. The conference underscored that these transformations are not merely technological applications but fundamental shifts in processes and operations aligned with sustainable development goals. This "twin transformation" is considered a global imperative for a prosperous and greener future.
The conference aimed to foster a deeper understanding of this twin transition, exploring sustainable development models that balance economic growth, environmental protection, and improved quality of life. A key focus was finding solutions that harmoniously integrate digital and green transformations in businesses, optimizing efficiency while ensuring sustainable growth.
Vietnam's commitment to this twin transformation is evident in its national digital transformation program (2025-2030) and its pledge at COP26 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. While significant progress has been made, particularly in e-commerce and online public services, the challenges are substantial. The transformation requires a fundamental shift in mindset and action, going beyond traditional approaches.
Professor Ho Tu Bao, Director of the Data Science Laboratory at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), emphasized that digital transformation must be a revolution, not just the application of technology. He stressed that Vietnam missed opportunities in the first three industrial revolutions but the fourth offers a chance for countries without established industrial traditions. He defined digital transformation as establishing a "digital production regime"—a new, advanced production method intrinsically aligned with the global trend towards green transformation. He powerfully asserted that digital and green transitions must proceed hand-in-hand.
The conference included analyses of Vietnam's digital progress, noting considerable advancements but also highlighting the need for further development. Experts suggested learning from countries like China, France, and the US, which have implemented effective strategies in areas such as public services, digital infrastructure, and e-commerce. Adapting these strategies to Vietnam's unique economic and cultural context is crucial.
Addressing Vietnam's net-zero commitment, Dr. Bach Tan Sinh, a senior advisor at the Circular Economy Development Institute, pointed out challenges such as limited public awareness of the urgency of emission reduction, insufficient local implementation capacity, and a lack of coordination among stakeholders. He stressed the vital role of technology in overcoming these hurdles, enabling effective problem identification, addressing urgent human needs, and supporting integrated management. The government's recent policies supporting the circular economy model, including sandbox mechanisms, are a positive step.
The conference served as a platform for experts, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and academics to exchange knowledge, experiences, and innovative solutions, fostering collaboration towards a sustainable future. The consensus was clear: a successful future hinges on the successful integration of digital and green transformations.
