Implementing the resolutions of the Party Committee and the Council of University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University, Hanoi (UEB) on development orientation for the period 2025 - 2030, aiming to approach undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs and methods for faculty with the goal of digital technology access, the School of Business Administration organized a seminar on "Programs and Teaching Methods in Economics and Business in the Digital Environment."
The seminar featured participation from keynote speaker Prof. Ho Tu Bao from the Institute of Advanced Mathematics and lecturers from the School of Business Administration, Economics, International Business, and researchers. With the aim of "from awareness to changing approaches in teaching and economic/business research in the context of digital transformation," Prof. Ho Tu Bao presented fundamental and applied knowledge of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and other foundational technologies in current teaching and research.
A somewhat abstract concept, often misunderstood, the real-digital environment was clarified: "The environment of the digital age: 'Real-digital environment' is the environment we have been living in, where physical entities are gradually acquiring their digital versions (data), and therefore can connect with each other via the Internet." From this concept, the notion of digital transformation is derived: "Digital transformation is the process of fundamentally and comprehensively changing life and work from a physical environment to a real-digital environment."
The evolution in economic forms with the emergence of digital economies demands that university programs in Economics be updated and flexibly adjusted to align with educational needs and the job market. These issues were directly discussed by educators and speakers at the seminar.
Firstly, educational institutions need to review their curriculum and subjects to adapt them to new knowledge directions. Additionally, they should introduce new courses such as business analysis, statistical mathematics, and develop new specialized fields related to digital finance (Fintech), digital marketing, and business data analytics.
Furthermore, universities and departments/institutes need to define content with the necessary knowledge and skills required for employment in enterprises. Solutions were proposed to address these issues, such as enhancing new learning content relevant to practical needs in positions like data analysis and digital environments. Modular course design for flexible innovation was also discussed at the seminar.
In addition to curriculum content, continuous improvement of the quality of teaching staff and expanding connections with businesses, alumni, and data capabilities to continuously update training content in response to labor market changes were emphasized in the discussions.
At the seminar, faculty from the School of Business Administration also discussed topics related to the urgency of changing teaching and research methods in the context of digital economic development, including blended learning (harmonizing classroom teaching with digital technologies and materials, including online teaching and learning), and adaptive learning (analyzing learner data and immediately adjusting learning materials and assessments, using data analysis and AI to support teaching and learning).
There were also suggestions to synchronize and comprehensively change the current program system, acknowledged as challenging. Prof. Ho Tu Bao shared experiences and proposed the PDMT formula: Problem-Driven Orientation-Method-Tools as a key to this change process.
In conclusion, participants, including Prof. Dr. Ho Tu Bao from the University of Economics - Hanoi National University, had the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of digital transformation and digital economics. Faculty members also recognized the crucial role of curriculum and teaching method changes for students, aiming to build a solid foundation in both expertise and skills to prepare them for the job market. The exchange session provided motivation for the School of Business Administration and Hanoi National University of Economics to innovate and diversify their programs and teaching methods to embrace digital technologies.
