UEB Experts' Research and Policy Advisory Highlights in 2024

10:13 27/02/2025

Amidst the turbulence of 2024, marked by geopolitical shifts, supply chain realignments, the rof AI, and the intensifying climate crisis, Vietnam needed insightful guidance more than ever. VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB) stepped forward, providing crucial research and policy recommendations to help the nation adapt and thrive in a dynamic global landscape.

A Pioneer in Research and Policy Advisory

UEB has solidified its leading position in research and policy advisory with 13 research groups, including 5 strong groups at the VNU level, focusing on key economic issues such as enterprise productivity, international integration, "Made in Vietnam" lean management, and optimal decision-making models.

To promote applied research, in 2022, UEB issued Regulations on a fund for developing scientific and technological potential, creating resources to support practical research. From 2022 to 2024, the University established a process for implementing and disseminating research results, closely following policy advisory commissions arising from pressing socio-economic issues in line with the resolutions of the Party and the Government. Simultaneously, UEB established a set of criteria for evaluating the quality of policy advice, ensuring the scientific rigor and effectiveness of the research.

Going beyond academic publications, UEB actively promotes knowledge transfer through policy advisory workshops, scientific forums in cooperation with ministries and government agencies, and direct knowledge transfer to Party and Government agencies. The University also proactively communicates research findings through reputable media channels, expanding its social impact.

With a mission to connect knowledge and practice, UEB actively participates in major socio-economic forums, attracting hundreds of domestic and international experts, scientists, and managers. In particular, UEB's analysis of policies to support businesses in the socio-economic recovery program has been highly appreciated, contributing to bringing scientific solutions into practice and promoting the sustainable development of the Vietnamese economy.

Practical Contributions Through Workshops and Policy Advisory Reports

In 2024, UEB organized series of national and international conferences, focusing on up to date topics namely green transformation, digital transformation, FDI attraction strategies, energy transition, and enhancing the competitiveness of the economy. Not only are these academic forums, but they also serve as important bridges to directly transfer research to policy-making bodies, contributing to guiding national development strategies.

In particular, UEB has been entrusted by the Central Economic Commission, the Central Propaganda and Training Commission, and VNU to conduct research summarizing important economic issues. A prime example is the Conference on New Thinking and Orientations in FDI Attraction, summarizing Resolutions 50 and 36, in cooperation with the Central Economic Commission in 2024. This conference not only assesses and adjusts investment attraction policies but also affirms UEB's position as a leading research center, partnering with the Government in sustainable economic development. Another notable highlight is the coordination between UEB and the Central Propaganda and Training Commission in organizing the Maritime Economy Conference in 2023 and 2024. This is an important forum bringing together leading experts to discuss sustainable maritime economic development strategies according to Resolution 56. UEB also plays a policy advisory role through in-depth reports sent to Party, Government, and business agencies, providing directional analysis in the new context.

One of UEB's outstanding academic products is the Annual Report on the Vietnamese Economy, published since 2008, providing in-depth analysis of domestic and international economic trends, along with policy recommendations of practical value.

In addition, UEB also hosts many thematic seminars on pressing economic issues such as: Promoting textile and garment exports; Developing the carbon credit market; Economic security in the context of the Industrial Revolution 4.0; Tax incentive policies for businesses and the global minimum tax... These seminars are closely coordinated with ministries and government agencies to ensure high applicability, supporting the process of policy formulation and economic management.

UEB expands its international cooperation network through a series of Vietnam Economic Forums with other countries, implemented in conjunction with the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, embassies, VCCI, and international partner universities. As a result, UEB's research is not only of national significance but also of value in the regional and global context, promoting connections between researchers, policymakers, and the business community.

Expanding Media Influence and Strategic Partnerships

In the context of a volatile global economy, the media not only conveys information but also contributes to shaping social awareness, supporting policy formulation, and promoting reform. Recognizing this clearly, UEB has proactively cooperated with leading media channels such as VnEconomy, VOV, VTV, the National Assembly Television, and the Vietnam News Agency Television... Through interviews, discussions, talk shows, and in-depth research articles, UEB not only disseminates knowledge but also contributes to providing the scientific basis for national economic policies.

With its strength in in-depth research, UEB experts regularly appear in the media to share their views on macroeconomic and microeconomic issues such as digital transformation, greening the textile and garment industry, personal financial management, promoting GDP, attracting foreign investment, and the role of universities in the innovation ecosystem… These studies are not only theoretical but also highly applied, helping businesses and managers have more scientific basis for making decisions.

In particular, UEB has built a close cooperative relationship with VOV1 - Vietnam's leading economic news channel. The university's experts are regularly invited to participate in in-depth analysis programs, providing timely perspectives on market fluctuations, monetary policy, institutional reform, and business development trends. This cooperation helps listeners access information objectively and with high practical value.

In addition, cooperation with VnEconomy also plays an important role in bringing UEB's research closer to businesses and managers. In-depth reports, thematic seminars, and analysis from UEB are reliable sources of reference in the field of economics and finance. Editor-in-Chief of VnEconomy, Dr. Chu Van Lam, once said: "UEB's strength is research, while VnEconomy has an advantage in disseminating knowledge. The combination of research and communication will enhance the impact of research results."

The synergy between UEB and its media partners not only makes research more applicable but also improves the quality of economic information in Vietnam. By proactively pursuing strategic partnerships, UEB not only affirms its position as a leading economic research center but also contributes to guiding policy, raising community awareness, and promoting the sustainable development of the Vietnamese economy.

Strengthening Knowledge Transfer and Business Connections

Going beyond traditional research and advisory activities, UEB also aims to expand the ecosystem connecting faculty, researchers, and businesses. The University is ready to act as a bridge, creating a favorable environment for experts to participate more deeply in the process of policy formulation and business development, helping research to be applied effectively in practice.

With strong investment in research and policy advisory, UEB continues to affirm its pioneering position in the Vietnamese higher education system. Not only is it a place to train high-quality human resources, but UEB is also a leading research and policy advisory center, making practical contributions to the sustainable development of the country's economy.
