VNU University of Economics and Business recently held a training course focused on enhancing English-medium instruction (EMI) skills for its faculty. With nearly 30% of specialized courses now taught in English, effective communication and blending language skills with subject matter expertise are crucial for UEB lecturers.
The course was led by Dr. Vu Thi Thanh Nha, Head of the Postgraduate Department at the VNU University of Languages and International Studies. Dr. Nha is a respected scholar with numerous publications in specialized English, teaching methodologies, needs analysis, and curriculum development.
In his opening remarks, Assoc.Prof. Hoang Khac Lich, UEB Vice Rector, emphasized the importance of equipping lecturers with advanced teaching methods in today's increasingly globalized and ever-evolving educational landscape. He highlighted the course's aim to introduce modern EMI methodologies and foster interactive discussions, experience sharing, and practical skill development. He encouraged active participation, stating that the course provided a valuable opportunity to learn from both experts and colleagues.
The training covered key areas such as TKT-CLIL (Teaching Knowledge for Teachers - Content and Language Integrated Learning), CLIL lesson planning, designing learning activities, developing assessment methods aligned with learning outcomes, and enhancing CLIL teaching and learner evaluation skills.
Dr. Pham Manh Hung, a lecturer at the Institute of Business Administration, praised the course's practicality and relevance. He found it particularly beneficial in understanding how to effectively deliver course content in English and equip students with the necessary specialized language skills for their future careers. He appreciated the interactive approach through discussions and group work, which fostered peer learning and broadened perspectives. He also noted the instructor's excellent English proficiency and clear explanations. As a suggestion for improvement, he recommended incorporating more specific examples of how lecturers can enhance students' specialized English language skills through their teaching.
Dr. Pham Thi Linh, a lecturer from the Faculty of Political Economy, shared her initial curiosity about the differences between teaching in English and Vietnamese, beyond simply translating content. She valued the shared experiences and encouragement to simplify complex concepts using diverse teaching methods. However, she suggested tailoring future courses to the specific needs of different disciplines due to the unique terminology and content of each subject area.
The training also focused on designing specialized lessons in English, communication skills within the EMI environment, and integrating technology into teaching practices.
