On September 28, 2023, the Times Higher Education ranking organization announced the results of the 2024 World University Rankings (THE WUR 2024). According to the results, Vietnam National University was ranked in the 1201-1500 group out of 1904 higher education institutions that were ranked. This was also the ranking period with the highest number of participating higher education institutions, with 2673 HEIs from 127 countries and territories.
In this ranking, VNU continued solidifying its position as a leading institution for education in Vietnam. In the Teaching criterion, it was ranked first in Vietnam with a score of 20.9 (an increase of 2.2 points compared to THE WUR 2023). Following VNU were Hanoi University of Science and Technology (15.7 points), Ho Chi Minh City National University (14.6 points), Hue University (13.3 points), Ton Duc Thang University (12.9 points), and Duy Tan University (12.1 points). The results of the criteria in THE WUR 2024 were analyzed from over 134 million citations from 16.5 million scientific publications in the Scopus database and survey data from 68,402 scholars worldwide.
In the THE WUR 2024 ranking, the Times Higher Education ranking organization used a new set of criteria (THE WUR 3.0) that included 18 evaluation criteria in 5 groups: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry Income, and Internationalization.
Compared to previous ranking methods, THE WUR 3.0 increased the number of evaluation criteria from 13 to 18.
In the THE WUR 2024 ranking, Vietnam had six higher education institutions ranked, including VNU Hanoi, VNU Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Duy Tan University, Ton Duc Thang University, and Hue University.
Before this, in June 2023, VNU maintained its position in the top 1000 of the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) and continued to excel in specific fields with six areas ranked compared to 2022. Additionally, two subject groups at VNU were also ranked, namely Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences, with the Natural Sciences group being ranked number 1 in Vietnam.
On July 30, 2023, the Cybermetrics Labs research group (part of the National Research Council of Spain) released the second Webometrics ranking of 2023. In this ranking, VNU continued to maintain its position among the top 700 excellent educational institutions, ranking 671st.
On July 3, 2023, Times Higher Education (THE) published the results of the Young University Rankings 2023 (THE Young UR 2023), a ranking of the best universities under 50 years old. In this ranking, VNU Hanoi was once again highly regarded, especially in the Teaching criterion, with a score of 23.7. This marks the third consecutive year that VNU Hanoi has maintained its leading position in Vietnam in the Teaching criterion on THE Young UR rankings.
